Enola Maxwell Middle School

"California Oral Histories"
This mural is dedicated to the memory of our friend and teacher Tony Alvite (1943 - 2005)

This mosaic mural was created by 8th graders
from Tony Alvite class at Enola D. Maxwell Middle School

Spring 2005.

This service learning project brought Eva Royale of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and Harvey Schwartz of the I.L.W.U. into the classroom to talk to the students about California Labor History and the art of creating oral histories.
The students then went out into their community and created their own oral histories on the subject of California Labor History.

Three days before this residency was to start, the partnering teacher, Tony Alvite died suddenly. With the help of the Principal Jerrold preston, we continued with the project. At the students insistance, Mr. Alvite is memorialized on the mural.
